The Modern Guide to Hair Oiling
Your grandmother was onto something. How to oil your hair so it helps, not hinders — and how often you really need to.

Hair oiling is one of the oldest beauty rituals in South Asia, and modern research is catching up with why it works: oils reduce the amount of water hair absorbs during washing, which limits the swelling and shrinking that weakens strands over time.
Pre-wash, not overnight-every-night
Oil works best as a pre-wash treatment. Apply it an hour or two before washing — or overnight once a week — then shampoo it out. Leaving heavy oil on the scalp for days can trap sweat and build-up.
How to do it
- Section dry hair and apply oil to the scalp with a dropper
- Massage with fingertips (not nails) for 3–5 minutes
- Smooth what's left on your hands through the lengths
- Wait at least an hour, then shampoo — twice if needed
How often?
Two to three times a week is plenty for most hair types. Oily scalps may prefer once a week, focusing oil on lengths rather than roots.
“The massage matters as much as the oil. Those five minutes are the ritual.”
