Understanding Your Skin Barrier
Tight, stinging, suddenly breaking out? Your barrier might be asking for a break. Here's how to recognise it — and repair it.
By Dr. Leela Iyer, Consulting Dermatologist (demo) · 5 August 2026
Your skin barrier — the stratum corneum — is often described as a brick wall. Skin cells are the bricks; a mix of ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids is the mortar. When that mortar is healthy, water stays in and irritants stay out.
Signs your barrier is compromised
A damaged barrier doesn't always look dramatic. Watch for:
- Tightness after cleansing
- Stinging when applying products that never bothered you before
- Sudden sensitivity, redness or flaking
- Skin that feels oily and dehydrated at the same time
What causes it
Over-exfoliation is the most common culprit — too many acids, scrubs or retinoids at once. Harsh cleansers, hot water, low humidity and even stress play a role too.
How to repair it
Strip your routine back to the essentials for two to four weeks: a gentle cleanser, a hydrating serum, a ceramide-rich moisturiser and sunscreen. Pause exfoliants and retinoids until the stinging stops.
Once your skin feels comfortable again, reintroduce actives one at a time — and slowly.
“Repairing your barrier is less about adding products and more about taking things away.”
