7 Sunscreen Mistakes Almost Everyone Makes
You're wearing SPF — great. But are you using enough, reapplying, and covering the spots that burn most?
By Dr. Leela Iyer, Consulting Dermatologist (demo) · 12 June 2026
Sunscreen is the single most effective skincare product for preventing premature ageing and dark spots. But only if it's used well.
The most common slip-ups
- Using too little — you need about two finger-lengths for face and neck
- Skipping it on cloudy days or indoors near windows
- Forgetting ears, neck and the back of hands
- Not reapplying after two to three hours outdoors
- Relying on SPF in makeup alone
- Applying it before moisturiser instead of after
- Using last summer's opened bottle
The easy fix
Find a sunscreen you actually enjoy wearing. Texture is everything — if it feels good, you'll use enough of it, every day.
